About Us

Deborah Cohen, PhD is an Assistant Professor Department of Family Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.  She is a communication scientist with expertise in using qualitative methods to understand communication in healthcare settings.  Dr. Cohen has experience using a wide range of qualitative methods, including observation, interview, and discourse analysis methods, such as conversation analysis.

Benjamin Crabtree, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and is the Director of the Research Division.  Dr. Crabtree is a medical anthropologist and an internationally recognized expert in qualitative research methods.  He has played an important role in integrating qualitative research into the study of family medicine.  Dr. Crabtree's work has led to an understanding of healthcare systems as complex organizations.  His work has also led to the development of multi-method research approaches that integrate qualitative and quantitative methods.  These methods were developed and are designed for studying the complexity of healthcare organizations.
